This thread discusses the Content article: Movement Monitoring: Bio(metrics) and Zoe(lodging)

Two recent news stories caught my attention this week on AlterNet. The first, Pentagon Holds Thousands of Americans 'Prisoners of War', is part of the soldiers and Marines, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, who gave testimony at last weekend's Winter Soldier investigation. Approximately 60,000 members of US armed forces have been the victims of stop-loss, a device under which their contracts can be extended until after Bush's "war or terror" is declared over. The second, Torture in Our Own Backyards: The Fight Against Supermax Prisons, discusses the conditions in which 20,000 US inmates in 44 states, are currently living - including 23 hours in their cells. Declared "unmanageable" they are completely stripped of any semblance of life. Here's a video of Kern Valley State Prison.

The _title_ of the article was in part inspired by discussion of bio/zoes in Agamben's Homo Sacer.

The Totem group was the real social unit of the aboriginal Australian. The Totem is not an Australian word but it is generally accepted to designate the name of an institution which is found everywhere among primitive people. The Totem group is primarily a group of people distinguished by the sign of a natural _object_, such as an animal or tree, who may not intermarry with one another — this is the first rule of primitive social organization; its origin is lost in antiquity ("Alcheringa") but its _object_ is certainly to prevent the intermarriage of close relatives. Marriage takes place between men and women of different Totems; the husband belongs to all the women of his wife's totem and the wife belongs to all the men of the husband's totem at the same time that a communal marriage is established between the men and women of the two different Totems - the men and women being of the same generation. This presents a most valuable _object_ive lesson in social history. There are no unmarried couples; marriage for them is part of the natural order into which they are born.
