Two recent news stories caught my attention this week on AlterNet. The first, Pentagon Holds Thousands of Americans 'Prisoners of War', is part of the soldiers and Marines, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, who gave testimony at last weekend's Winter Soldier investigation. Approximately 60,000 members of US armed forces have been the victims of stop-loss, a device under which their contracts can be extended until after Bush's "war or terror" is declared over. The second, Torture in Our Own Backyards: The Fight Against Supermax Prisons, discusses the conditions in which 20,000 US inmates in 44 states, are currently living - including 23 hours in their cells.
