Privatizing the Internet and “the Public” 2 Years, 6 Months ago
This thread discusses the Content article: Privatizing the Internet and “the Public”

Another story recently made news (if only for a minute) about lobbyist paying people to wait in line for them during public hearings on the Hill.

"Line-standing has been around for 15 years, and by now people on the Hill hardly see it anymore -- hardly see the people with folding chairs and blankets waiting outside congressional office buildings in the middle of the night, then lining up to shuffle into the building in the mornings, and setting up camp again outside hearing rooms, where they nap and talk (sometimes to themselves) and wait for their clients to arrive. And when the clients come, perky and caffeinated, having slept all night in real beds, they relieve the line-standers and nab seats in the hearing rooms -- the closer to the dais of power, the better." According to an article on The New York Times, Comcast announced today that they will no longer hamper file-sharing traffic and are going to "rapidly reconfigure our network management systems".
Comcast now says it is in talks with BitTorrent Inc., the company founded by the creator of the protocol, to come up with better ways to transport large files over the Internet. The companies said they want to work out these issues privately, without the need for government intervention.
According to the article Verizon Communications Inc. is in collaboration with Pando Networks to speed up file-sharing downloads. AT&T and Time Warner Cable are trying to catch up.

BoingBoing has a good run down of recent events related to the FCC hearings.
