A new computer program can decode brain activity to predict what someone is seeing. An article published yesterday in Nature outlines the journey of Jack Gallant, a neuroscientist at the University of California in Berkeley, who led the study. The team is using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map a subjects response to pictures shown and then use it to predict responses to new images.

On January 25 The Federal Communications Commission held a rare public hearing regarding their investigations into internet companies like Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon, who have been repeatedly caught blocking and spying on their customer’s internet activities. Hundreds of concerned citizens arrived to speak out on the importance of an open Internet, but were outdone by the corporate giants who had paid seat fillers to take their place. Comcast later admitted paying people to stack the room in their favor.

Electronic Tattoo Display Runs on Blood Print E-mail

This years Greener Gadgets Design Competition showcased Jim Mielke’s wireless blood-fueled “tattoo” - a subcutaneously implanted touch-screen that operates as a cell phone display, with the potential for 3G video calls, visible through skin. It's powered by a fuel cell that converts the energy found in blood with a non-toxic substance used to draw electrons from glucose.

Pentagon Plots Sim Iraq Print E-mail

The Office of the Secretary of Defense is getting help from a computer model of "Human, Social, and Cultural Behavior" in Middle Eastern Locales. The simulation tool will be used to help military trainers handle (mathematically probable) insurgencies, emergent conflict, and "strategic communications" - propaganda .

Afghan Student Sentenced to Death for Report Print E-mail

'A young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court for downloading a report from the internet. The sentence is then upheld by the country's rulers. This is Afghanistan – not in Taliban times but six years after "liberation" and under the democratic rule of the West's ally Hamid Karzai.'
